Some of you are simply looking for a nice place to enjoy some sunshine and relaxation. While, we know, some others of you are looking to Mexico to relocate and retire…to be come "expats". (ex·pa·tri·ate : To remove (oneself) from residence in one's native land.)
One great idea many people are already doing, is to purchase a condo or villa here in Mexico, use it for vacationing for a few years until your ready to move here full time. In the meantime, you can rent it out, creating some income. If you choose to do this, we would like to help by keeping your property rented out for you when you are not using it yourself. Becoming More Than a "Tourist"
When you have decided you want to stay for extended periods of time (perhaps while it is 30 degrees below in Canada!), or are thinking of immigrating to Mexico, you may request from the authorities the corresponding immigration permits, which are the FM2 and the FM3.
FM2: This document applies to IMMIGRANTS. As an immigrant, you are not a permanent resident, but you are eligible to apply to become an INMIGRADO (permanent resident of Mexico).
FM3: As a holder of an FM3 you are allowed to stay in the country as a NON-IMMIGRANT for a period of one year. This permit may be renewed annually. After the fifth year you may be interested in acquiring the next immigration status (IMMIGRANT) or simply continuing on as an FM3 holder.
